About Our Name
The Appian Way, or Via Appia in Latin, is a road that leads into the city of Rome. Built around 300 BC, this road was instrumental in establishing Rome as a center of commerce and in allowing her to efficiently exercise her military might. The ancient Romans considered the road sacred.
This ancient road is still in use. The same road that the Caesars used to move their armies is currently being used by tourists and delivery trucks. The Appian Way symbolizes excellence in design, as it has maintained its utility and aesthetic qualities over two millennia.
The word Way, in Latin, Via, as in the Chinese, Tao, has two very different but interconnected meanings. The first refers to a conduit to a desired end, a thoroughfare. The second refers to a manner of doing things, a style of action. Ancient languages from very different cultures recognized that often the two components were inseparable, and ancient literature frequently made use of this related concept.
The Appian International Research team has worked in 20 countries to date and is currently exploring options in a handful of others. We have developed the expertise necessary to complete trials that lead to successful applications in the regions where we can best study the desired indications and provide drug therapy for individuals in developing countries who would otherwise go untreated.
The reference to the Appian Way in our name acts as a constant reminder of our commitment to excellence in design and quality in execution of our projects.
